We will explore the biology of insects and related arthropods, structured around application and investigation of the relationship between humans and insects. Insects have a remarkable impact on humans. Significant broad topics include medical and veterinary entomology, forensic entomology, the role of insects in human history and culture, and biodiversity of and ecosystem services provided by insects.
We will also explore introduction of non-native species, global climate change and emerging diseases, insect life cycles, fear of insects, pests and pesticides, and insects in the movies, music, literature and the arts. We find insects just about everywhere, with some representatives even in the oceans and polar regions. They can be perceived as disgusting, bothersome, dangerous, cool, or beautiful. It is easy to argue that all are complex and interesting to study. My goal is that you gain a lifelong appreciation for this important group of animals.
